Evil Does Not Exist (2024)

In this film there is a monumental importance in the relationship of the villagers with their environment.
Nature and its fauna are a universe that the population respects, maintaining a balance with the place where they live.
They use the water for their business and find a way to live in a special place, but always respecting what surrounds them.
Somehow they create a microcosm where everyone understands each other and seeks to maintain that peace. They live by their own rules, which do not need to be expressed.
All this is broken at the moment of the meeting with the representatives of the project.
The connection that the inhabitants maintain with the nature that surrounds them is unique and the company cannot foresee or understand this situation from its vantage point in the city.
It is clear that they have not taken into account the way of life of these inhabitants, nor do they respect the environment where they are going to build.

They intend to build a campsite with a project that would mean the contamination of the town's water. They are not able to understand what this contamination means for them.
The people are not willing to sacrifice nature for the sake of higher business income.
During the meeting that the representatives have with the consultant, the attitude of the company towards the inhabitants of the village becomes clear.
They do not really intend to solve all the inconveniences exposed by the inhabitants, but they try to accept a minimum proposal to convince them of their good intentions.
They try to feign a non-existent interest and concern for the prosperity of the environment. Rather than delay the project and lose the subsidy, they prefer to start the work, even if it is against the opinion of the inhabitants.
In reality, the meeting to know the thoughts of the people regarding the project is a pantomime, they only need it to justify that they have communicated with the neighbors.
With this capitalist and not very humanistic attitude it is clear that they do not empathize with what they believe to be “villagers” and the relationship between the company and the inhabitants will be impossible.
They see them as useless. They belittle their way of life and minimize the difficulty of their work. They go so far as to suggest that the protagonist be used as a consultant during the works, claiming “he will have a lot of free time”.
The film claims to be slow and some scenes may seem to drag on too long. However, I consider these pauses necessary to appreciate and reflect on the aforementioned aspects that the director wants to convey to us. The ending is shocking, full of symbolism, and provokes the viewer.
