Emilia Pérez (2024)

The film is a marvel in every aspect, both visually and in the script and performances, and is yet another example of Audiard's talent, who is responsible for great films.

This time he tells us a story that takes place almost entirely in Mexico (except for a small part in Switzerland and other European countries), spoken mainly in Spanish, and which is a perfect mix of genres, as it is a musical, but also a dramatic story with elements of social criticism on a current issue such as sex change.

It has many funny moments due to the irony of some characters and other thriller moments with kidnappings and drug trafficking as background.

The film is very well presented, finished, directed, has a good character development, and its 130 minutes pass in a breath (perhaps, in the central part, there are some moments where it loses some interest), and has a very well selected cast, especially the female cast, which is excellent.

Of all the actresses, Zoe Saldaña, who plays a lawyer defending the victims of drug trafficking, and the Spanish Karla Sofía Gascón, who is magnificent playing a very complex character, a man who becomes a woman whose name gives the film its title, stand out above the rest.

The cast is completed by Adriana Paz, who plays Epiphany, Selena Gomez, as Jessi (Manitas' wife) and Edgar Ramirez in the role of Gustavo.

A film that has been selected by France for the Oscars, and that will probably be one of the films that will have the most prominence in the next North American awards season.

It is not simple, nor recommended to all audiences, and it will have its detractors, which may displease many people, who have not liked it in Mexico because it doesn't make a good impression on their country.

The songs and musical numbers are spectacular, and I think they are developed at the perfect moment.
