A Real Pain (2024)

Second film as a director of the actor Jesse Eisenberg after “When you finish saving the world” of 2022, this time he stars alongside Kieran Culkin where personal traumas, past dramas and accumulated pain will be treated.

The script is undoubtedly one of the most interesting parts of the film, with fast and loquacious dialogues that give an interesting harmony to the plot.

David and Benji are cousins who have just lost their grandmother to whom they were very close, she was a Holocaust survivor, and they decide, to honor her memory, to visit Poland to see her origins.

There they will see historic Jewish sites such as the ghetto, as well as the house and area where their grandmother lived. However, David, who is happily married with a son, hasn't seen Benji in a while and finds himself someone irresponsible and erratic, with many problems who clearly needs help.

A superb role for Kieran Culkin an outspoken, aggressive and rude Benji who is exhausting, a conflicted character who carries a great sadness and a certain charm at the same time.

Herein lies the key to the film, for beyond visiting the horrific concentration camps, it is an in-depth study of these two disparate people. Eisenberg, however, who also writes and directs, can't help but play the same role as always

But note Eisenberg's sensitivity in portraying a lonely character who has no easy solution, that loneliness is killing him and ignoring him on the part of his cousin would be the end of him. Dealing with all that is going to be a difficult task.

A universal story beyond religions that deals with mental health and trauma through a trip to the past, in this journey through Poland where complex family relationships can make you uncomfortable or make you laugh in some curiously funny moments.
