The Executioner / eng/esp

Hello friends, today I would like to share this illustration I made to pay tribute to a great Spanish film director.
The terrible executions that were carried out during Franco's regime in Spain in the early 1960s are dealt with in one of the best Spanish films of all time: El verdugo (The Executioner), 1963.

Directed by Luis G. Berlanga, it is an amusing, crude and acid satire; a strong denunciation of the death penalty and the cultural and social values of that Spain dictated with an iron fist by Franco.

In homage to Berlanga's work and taking this film as a reference, I created this poster, with a critical approach to the act of execution that was carried out by the method called "garrote" or "garrote vil", in force in Spain until the total abolition of the death penalty in 1978. I chose not to show the mechanism of the garrote but the deadly effects it produced in the victim through his x-ray in the act, with the intention of conveying a shocking, heartbreaking and sordid message. The satirical component is present in the textual description of a group of steps or instructions to be followed by the executor for a successful work:

  • hold torso, feet and hands
  • adjust the iron to the gullet
  • cover the head
  • give three-quarter (or more) turns to the lathe
  • crushing the throat, crushing vertebrae and stripping the neck
  • to get paid (to be paid to live)

The poster was created in the year 2021 to be printed in two color inks, using the reproduction technique called silkscreen printing.

-sujetar torso, pies y manos

Great history lesson ! Im a history lover and I appreciate that. By the way "Verdugo" is the name of an enemy creature in the survival horror videogame Resident Evil 4. This monster rips heads like an executioner
