Malibu Rising 🌅 Book Review

"Malibu Rising" is another Taylor Jenkins Reid book that I have read. I thoroughly enjoyed the author's writing style, her incredible attention to detail and the unique creation of each character.

Malibu is buzzing with the news of the annual party at the home of the soufflé, as well as model Nina. However, the hostess of the party and daughter of world-famous singer Mick Riva is not so enthusiastic. She is aware that many of the guests will be talking about her fresh split from tennis player Brandon Randall. Nina's siblings - surfing champion Jay, renowned photographer Hud and youngest Kit - will also be at the event. None of them expect their lives to be turned upside down in just one night.

In this book, we take a deep dive into the lives and fates of the people of Malibu, where nothing is as it seems at first glance. The atmosphere of the place is downright electrifying - from the annual parties following the home of famous celebrities, to the daily lives of the characters, which at first glance seem idyllic, but soon turn out to be steeped in emotions and secrets.

The story is set in the 1980s and the events are contained within a 24-hour time frame. I found it interesting that the action happening hour by hour on the day of Nina's party is interspersed with memories of the period before she was born, right up to the party. The reader also learns about the family's past, from meeting Mick and Jane, to the birth of their children, to the period when all four are on their own.

I liked the several references to "The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo", set in similar years to "Malibu Rsing" The author has built her own literary universe, filled with celebrities and characters from the elite social class, endowing them with life, but also with human weaknesses and dilemmas. They make different, often bad decisions, which results in many unexpected twists and turns, something I really enjoy in Taylor Jenkins Reid's books.

"Malibu Rising" is a book that deserves to be appreciated for its slow but engaging plot development and colourful characters. I would definitely reach for it a second time.

"Malibu płonie" jest kolejną książką Taylor Jenkins Reid, którą przeczytałam. Styl pisania autorki, jej niesamowita dbałość o detale i unikalna kreacja każdej postaci bardzo przypadły mi do gustu.

Malibu aż huczy od wieści o corocznej imprezie w domu suferki, jak i modelki Niny. Gospodyni przyjęcia, a zarazem córka słynnego na całym świecie piosenkarza Micka Rivy nie pała jednak tak wielkim entuzjazmem. Jest świadoma tego, że wielu gości będzie rozmawiało o jej świeżym rozstaniu z tenisistą Brandonem Randallem. Na imprezie pojawi się również rodzeństwo Niny - mistrz surfingu Jay, znany fotograf Hud i najmłodsza Kit. Żadne z nich nie spodziewa się, że ich życie przewróci się do góry nogami w ciągu zaledwie jednej nocy.

W tej książce zanurzamy się głęboko w życiu i losach mieszkańców Malibu, gdzie nic nie jest takie, jak się wydaje na pierwszy rzut oka. Atmosfera tego miejsca jest wręcz elektryzująca - od corocznych imprez po domu słynnych osobistości, po codzienne życie bohaterów, które na pierwszy rzut oka wydaje się być sielanką, ale szybko okazuje się być przesiąknięte emocjami i tajemnicami.

Akcja toczy się w latach 80-tych, a wydarzenia zamykają się w ramach 24 godzin. Zaciekawiło mnie to, że akcja dziejąca się godzina po godzinie w dniu imprezy u Niny przeplata się ze wspomnieniami z okresu przed jej narodzinami, aż do momentu przyjęcia. Czytelnik poznaje również przeszłość rodziny, od poznania Micka i Jane, przez narodziny ich dzieci, po okres, w którym cała czwórka jest zdana sama na siebie.

Spodobało mi się kilka nawiązań do książki "Siedmiu mężów Evelyn Hugo", której akcja działa się w podobnych latach, co "Malibu płonie". Autorka zbudowała swoje własne literackie uniwersum, wypełnione gwiazdami i postaciami z elitarnej klasy społecznej, obdarzając je życiem, ale także ludzkimi słabościami i dylematami. Podejmują różne, często złe decyzje, przez co pojawia się wiele niespodziewanych zwrotów akcji, co bardzo lubię w książkach Taylor Jenkins Reid.

"Malibu płonie" to książka, która zasługuje na docenienie przez powolny, ale wciągający rozwój akcji i barwnych bohaterów. Zdecydowanie sięgnę po nią drugi raz.
