The story

The films events revolve around the United States attempt to control the flow of drugs from Mexico to the United States as the war on drugs takes a new direction and new forms The story centers on the US governments attempts to address new threats related to terrorism and organized crime

After a series of terrorist attacks suspected of being carried out by members of Mexican drug cartels security measures are stepped up by the US government Experienced secret agent Matt Graver played by Josh Brolin is assigned a mission to confront these threats by any means necessary.

In the course of this mission Matt entrusts Alejandro Gillick Benicio del Toro who he previously worked with with a plan to kidnap the daughter of a Mexican drug cartel leader The goal of this operation is to ignite a war between rival gangs and cause chaos that weakens these gangs and reduces their threat to American national security.

As the plan is implemented and events unfold Matt and Alejandro are confronted with complex challenges related to ethics loyalty and politics which puts them in an unpredictable situation and forces them to make difficult and fateful decisions.

As tensions and risks rise many shocking truths about the war on drugs are revealed and the ramifications of covert operations and difficult decisions made by political and military leaders become clear.

Benicio del Toro and Josh Brolin give outstanding performances as usual in their roles as Alejandro Gillick and Matt Graver respectively They skillfully convey the tension and psychological complexities that escalate during the developments of the story

Director Steven Soderbergh shows his skills in creating an atmosphere of constant tension and excitement while maintaining a fast pace and masterful direction of the scenes The film has gorgeous photography that reflects the beauty of Mexicos landscape and the growing threats it poses.
