I watched this with my granddaughter when she was five. It was a bit dark for a child's movie, but she was OK with it. I loved it. I didn't think of it in terms of Expressionism (though I can see it now). I saw the struggle for identity and self. It was a brilliant movie.

Yes it is a bit dark for a 5 year old but it is a really nice watch especially for older children like us.
