"The Secret World of Arriety" Review: A World Full of Uncertainty

Greetings!

I have always been fascinated by secret-world movies or other-world movies because of the uniqueness of the story that comes with them. The Secret World of Arriety is one of the best movies I have seen so far. To be honest, I cannot remember a similar movie that I have ever seen. Imagine a world so secret, vulnerable, and dangerous as Arriety's world is fascinating.

Warning: Spoilers ahead

Plot

The Secret World of Arriety tells the story of little people who called themselves "Borrowers" because they borrow things from human beings for them to survive in addition to their ultimate task of not being seen.

A beautiful small world

The opening scenes make me wonder why the likes of Arriety exist and nothing intrigues me more than the scene where Arriety went with his father outside which makes me at the edge of my seat. It turns out, they are about to embark on a very dangerous task of "borrowing" things from human beings like food and anything that they need.

While it excites me to watch this kind of movie the excitement changed into concern because of the thought of them being seen. I knew that it was only a matter of time before they were going to be seen and when that happened I was so concerned about what would happen to them, to be honest.

Also, it makes me wonder if this movie will include a little backstory of how the likes of Arriety came into existence.

How small they are

One of the questions that came into my mind when I started watching this movie is how small the "Borrowers" are, and if you are also curious I got you covered. Below is a screenshot from the movie that clearly shows how small they are.

Great animation style as always

As I expected the animation style of The Secret World of Arriety is great, another great job from Studio Ghibli. Not only that this movie have a great animation style it also has a great story except for the open and sad ending of course, I guess I would want a happy-ever-after ending after all. But to be honest, a happy ending would still not make me happy knowing that Arriety's species is always in danger.

It's you that's given me the courage to live

Since I am in a period where I have lots of emotion I am always a bit affected by the emotions of the movies that I am watching and The Secret World of Arriety is not an exception. Most of the time my emotion is triggered when I hear some encouraging or sad lines from the characters of the movie that I am watching. In the case of The Secret World of Arriety is the line of Sho is "It's you that's given me the courage to live".

I think Sho uttered those words because he knew that Arriety was always in great danger and also because he once lost hope of living because of his heart condition. But when he met Arriety and saw her situation he realized that there other species that were facing far more danger than him therefore giving him the courage to fight to live.

Conclusion

Just like I said earlier this work from Studio Ghibli is great. The story and the animation style are what make this movie an anime classic. Although I particularly do not like the ending that much it doesn't take away anything from the movie, it could have been a lot better if it had a happy-ever-after ending (in my opinion) although in my mind this kind of story cannot have a happy ever after ending because of the perennial danger Arriety is facing and her fight for survival.

That is all for now guys, catch you up with the next one. Wishing you all safety, good health, and abundance.

A great movie as Studio Ghibli knows how to do, I agree that the ending was not much to my liking, but it was a different ending to what is usually watched and on that side I think it was fine. I wanted the happy ending but at the same time I wanted a different ending haha

Not many people know this movie, it's great that you brought it here so that more people can know it.

I also wanted a happy ending but it will only be short-lived since the species of Arriety is in constant danger.

Wow they are very much smaller than I thought they can live in inside the walls.
