"The Day the Earth Stood Still" by Scott Derrickson: An eye opning movie about our existence
Greetings!
When it comes to "end of the world movies" one of my favorites is "The Day the Earth Stood Still". It is by far one of the movies that has a unique plot, characters, and props. Although this is a remake it stands out from its predecessor on how unique the most important characters of the film are.
The narrative of "The Day the Earth Stood Still" is about the dramatic, suspenseful, and thrilling interference of a species to save Earth from impending death.
Confusion
The opening scenes of Helen Benson (Jennifer Connelly) are so effective that it made me want her to understand what is really happening. The confusion on her face is asking for a thousand answers as she all of a sudden became under federal custody. If I were in the situation of Helen Benson (Jennifer Connelly) it is only natural to ask questions and would want to hear answers. I love the scenes, they are so effective.
Shutting down a highway
The scene of shutting down a highway makes the suspense so intense that I wanted to know what the next scenes would be. I was actually not able to guess what would happen next and to my surprise, Helen Benson (Jennifer Connelly) and some other scientists board a Chinook helicopter on their way to a government installation.
Revelation
The script from the beginning until the revelation of the appearance of the vehicle of the Extra-Terrestrial is superb. It is the kind of script that I am looking for in an "end of the world" type of movie. It is also a kind of script that keeps me interested in the movie.
Appearance of the protector
Klaatu (Keanu Reeves) first appeared and then shot, the violence activates Gort a humanoid that seems to be the designated protector of Klaatu (Keanu Reeves). The appearance of Gort is simplistic yet very menacing especially when his visor glows red.
Real appearance of Klaatu
After Klaatu (Keanu Reeves) was shot he was brought to a facility for surgery and to remove the bullet and to everyone's surprise the bio-engineered space suit (organic material suit). This is the kind of plot and props that get me interested in any sci-fi movie.
We've watched, we've waited and hoped that you would change
One of the revelations in the film is when Klaatu (Keanu Reeves) says that they have waited long enough but the tipping point has been reached and they need to act to save Earth from humans. This revelation led me to believe that they have been watching humans for a long time.
Is that how it ends?
After Helen Benson (Jennifer Connelly) saw the swarm she asked, "Is that how it ends?" and Klaatu responded, Yes. At the brink of destruction, Klaatu saw the good side of humanity in Helen Benson (Jennifer Connelly) and in turn, he was convinced to stop the swarm from further advancing in destructing every man-made structure in its path.
Klaatu (Keanu Reeves) said he came to save the Earth and they will undo the damage done by humans and give Earth to start again. This purpose of Klaatu (Keanu Reeves) made me think that we ended are harming Earth more than we are saving it. We are indeed taking some steps to lessen the byproducts of our acts in destroying our world but I think we can do more. We are hurting out planet than we are healing it.
Gort breaking down into tiny flying insects is also a surprise. Although I haven't watched its predecessor I assume that the Gort in that 1951 movie is very different from this one. It seems that the Gort in this movie is some kind of nano-tech-based technology that can consume every man-made structure in its path.
This movie also made me think about what would happen in the next 1000 years, sure, I would have been long gone. But I just can't help to think about it.
The idea of Gort breaking down into tiny replicating insects is unique and I think I haven't seen this movie premise before. Also, the appearance of Gort makes it very futuristic and successfully gave me the notion that he came from a very advanced civilization (far more advanced than our civilization).
This movie also made me think that if Earth is going to end like this I consider myself lucky as living a life here on Earth is a blessing and of course, you only live once after that no one really knows what happens after life. If we are going to see what lies ahead after death we look for answers in the Bible.
Conclusion
All in all, I like this movie. The script, the effects, and the plot make it a good movie to watch during weekends. Its narrative makes you feel uneasy and amazed because it tackles a real subject. Sometimes we need this kind of movie to remind us what is happening in our world.
One of the scenes that I like the most in this film is when Klaatu (Keanu Reeves) talks to a professor who says that "only at the precipice" that a species evolve to survive. Which is actually what happens to Klaatu. The scene's script and reasoning on this particular are brilliant. Who would have written this kind of reasoning has a brilliant mind? It is this scene that made me think that we humans should not let the precipice arrive we should act now or it will be very hard for us to undo the damage and undoing it may force us to accept collateral damage.
