"Independence Day" by Roland Emmerich: Resolve in the Face of Annihilation

Greetings!

The 1990s had a lot of sci-fi movies that earned almost a billion dollars at the box office. One of the movies that nearly made a billion is "Independence Day" which was released in 1996. Independence Day has become a renowned film that became famous for its depiction of an alien invasion with the main goal of human annihilation.

The narrative of Independence Day is about the dramatic and patriotic depiction of humanity's fight for its right to live and to exist from the threat of annihilation from a hostile species of a distant civilization.

Showing the event of moon landing

I liked it when the film started off in outer space and showed the signage of mankind's lunar landing in 1969. The suspense in the sequence of scenes showing only the shadow of the mothership on the moon is brilliant which adds to the suspense of the film.

It's coming from the moon

The succeeding scene which shows an official bumping his head on the ceiling of his bed and the dialogue "it's coming from the moon" is also brilliant as they both perfectly depict a reaction that will come with the news of extra-terrestrial. A person that able to know the origin and distance of the signal shows the capability of government agencies around the world to secure Earth's space.

Launching the invading force

The scene showing the start of the alien's maneuver of spaceships in preparation for the Earth's invasion is also brilliant. Seeing such a scene in the film made me very very interested in watching it further. I do have my share of experiences where I lost interest in a movie and eventually stopped watching it altogether. But Independence Day is different each succeeding scene makes you want more.

Hovering above cities

The effects while the invading spaceships slowly show themselves above cities is excellent it is very convincing and it looks very real. This scene (image below) has only made me very very curious about what comes next.

A spaceship slowly showing itself from the sea of burning clouds

A funny scene

The scene of Will Smith (Captain Steven Hiller) learning for the first time about the arrival of aliens is kind of funny to me. It is a well-thought-out scene and is also effective as it makes me smile a little bit while keeping me intrigued for the scenes to come.

Will Smith (Captain Steven Hiller) portrayal of a clueless human is excellent

The portrayal of the knowledge of Jeff Goldblum (David Levinson) is brilliant as it meshes well with the film and when he shows the president the time left before they started to strike it makes the film thrilling as it progresses.

First dogfight (welcome to Earth)

Of course, almost all of the government on Earth now has the capability to strike back using their air forces. I am actually waiting for the moment on how the dogfight will unfold fitting a highly advanced alien technology versus a lesser technology of Earth's government. However, the film has successfully shown the Earth's pilots' capability. When Will Smith uttered the line "Welcome to Earth" when he punched an alien surprised me as I was not expecting such a scene.

A Revelation

I never thought that this film would take inspiration from the famous "Area 51". In this film, the existence of Area 51 proved to be true and in fact, inside Area 51 there is also a ship and three dead aliens recovered from the ship that crashed landed on Earth years ago.

In the film, this spaceship was recovered in the 1960s

Purpose of invasion

The moment of revelation of the true purpose of the aliens is perfect and the way it was revealed is unique since it was revealed through telepathy when an alien caught by Will Smith (Captain Steven Hiller) accidentally showed his thoughts when he tried to disorient the people around him. The purpose is to annihilate humans and then consume their natural resources and then they move on to their next target.

Of all the solutions, a virus

One of the surprises of the film is when Jeff Goldblum (David Levinson) is able to control some functions of the alien's ship by infecting it with a virus. Well, a virus narrative is unique. I never expect that such a solution will be used in the film.

One of the best speeches

What happens next is epic. But the most epic of them all is when Bill Pullman (President Thomas J. Whitmore) delivered his speech in front of would-be heroes who accepted the duty of saving planet Earth from the invading aliens.

Also, the fight scene that comes next is epic and the sacrifice of a former pilot to save thousands of lives is tearjerky as the pilot is vindicated because everyone does not believe that he was abducted by aliens years earlier.

Conlusion

All in all Independence Day is a very good movie. The script, the background music, and the plot are all amazing. The special effect of the film was ahead of its time in 1996. Although some of the scenes and script are a little bit shallow and terrible the film's overall performance is great. Its budget is said to be less than 80 million with a box-office earning of less than 900 million. So, if you want to see what a sci-fi movie looks like in the 1990s this is the film to watch. This film will make you proud as a human. And such an event could bind us together to fight a common enemy.
