Lets start this post with some personal info, I'm @ard0 but for the reasons you can read in this post I will now start posting in this new account and stop using the other one, With no more to add about that issue lets talk about the movie.
Finally, after a long time, I managed to see the 2023 Palme d'Or winner, Monster, by Korean director Koreeda. Knowing how Koreeda's cinema is, it was hard for me to get a moment to see his most recent film, because even though his films are captivating and beautiful in every aspect, I have been in the habit of watching this director's films with my dad on quiet days because somehow, that sentimentality that Koreeda creates to perfection enters me in a very specific way.
Monster is a film that follows the story of a widowed mother who, upon learning that her son is being beaten by his fifth grade teacher, goes to ask the school to expel the teacher. But that's only the tip of the story, as the way Koreeda chooses to tell the story makes the story nuanced, which really surprised me by the fact that it was such a “short” film, compared to others that have done something relatively similar, both in theme and execution. However, when it comes to execution, I don't know of a film that has done it in a better way (and really excuse me if I am speaking in a very ambiguous way, it is that part of the greatness of the film is in its storytelling and I feel that explaining how it is would be somewhat of a spoiler), while in theme, although there are several films that have touched on similar themes, this one does not seek to focus on a specific theme but covers many things at once, and this, to my surprise, does it almost perfectly.
Here is a point and aside, a parenthesis. Here I open a door, or well, a window, which is really hard for me to open a little: seeing something about child abuse hurts me in a stronger way than usual. Nothing like that ever happened to me, but for some reason, when I see something like that, either in real life or in a play, I feel that it could happen to a future child or a family member, and that makes me feel really bad. For the same reason, when a movie touches the topic of bullying the way it should, it tears me up to the point that it almost makes me cry for any kind of “silly” or implied thing the movie does.
And well, those who know Koreeda's films understand that his direction is a complete embrace to the soul, no matter what the story is about, they are almost always very familiar, beautiful and Sunday-like, but not Sunday-like because they are quiet films, but Sunday-like because they are a film to watch when you are not doing anything and want to get together with your family, or when you want to open up, when you know that a film is going to tear you apart but at the same time bring you back together, that's how Koreeda's films are, and above all, that's how Monster felt.

Por fin, luego de mucho tiempo, logré ver la película ganadora de la palma de Oro de 2023, Monster, del director coreano Koreeda. Sabiendo como es el cine de Koreeda, me costó conseguir un momento para poder ver su más reciente película, esto porque a pesar de que sus películas son cautivadoras y hermosas en todo aspecto, he tenido el habito de ver las películas de este director junto a mi papá en los días tranquilos porque así, de alguna manera, ese sentimentalismo que crea a la perfección Koreeda entra en mi de una forma muy específica.
Monster es una película que sigue la historia de una madre viuda que, al enterarse de que a su hijo lo está golpeando su profesor de quinto grado, va a pedir en el colegio que expulsen al profesor. Pero esa es solo la punta de la historia, ya que la forma en la que Koreeda decide contar la historia hace que esta tenga varias matices, lo que realmente me sorprendió por el hecho de que fuera una película tan “corta”, a comparación de otras que han hecho algo relativamente parecido, tanto en tema como en ejecución. Sin embargo, cuando hablamos de la ejecución, no conozco una película que lo haya hecho de una mejor forma (y realmente me disculpan si estoy hablando de forma muy ambigua, es que parte de la grandeza de la película está en su storytelling y siento que explicar cómo es sería de cierta manera un spoiler), mientras que en tema, aunque hay varias películas que han tocado temas parecidos, esta no busca enfocarse en un tema en específico sino que abarca muchas cosas a la vez, y esto, para mi sorpresa, lo hace de forma casi perfecta.
Aquí hay un punto y aparte, un paréntesis. Aquí abro una puerta, o bueno, una ventana, que realmente me cuesta un poco abrir: ver algo sobre maltrato juvenil me duele de una forma más fuerte de la normal. A mí nunca me pasó nada de ese estilo, pero por alguna razón, cuándo veo algo así, ya sea en la vida real o en alguna obra, siento que eso le podría pasar a un futuro hijo o a algún familiar, y eso me deja realmente mal. Por lo mismo, cuando una película toca el tema del bullying cómo debe hacerlo, esto me destroza al punto de que casi me hace llorar por cualquier tipo de cosa “tonta” o implícita que haga la película.
Y bueno, quien conoce el cine de Koreeda entiende que la dirección de este señor es un completo abrazo al alma, sin importar sobre que sea la historia, casi siempre son muy familiares, hermosas y domingueras, pero no domingueras por ser películas tranquilas, sino domingueras por ser una película que provoca ver cuándo no estás haciendo nada y quieres reunirte con tu familia, o cuándo quieres abrirte, cuándo sabes que una película te va a destrozar pero a su vez te va a volver a unir, así son las películas de Koreeda, y por sobre todo, así se sintió Monster.

Es fascinante cómo su estilo puede tocar el alma de una manera tan profunda, y es cierto que sus historias, aunque a menudo tristes, tienen esa capacidad de unir a las personas. La forma en que abordas el tema del maltrato y el bullying es muy conmovedora, y es comprensible que eso resuene tanto contigo. Las películas que tratan estos temas de manera sensible son las que realmente marcan la diferencia. 🙌
Pues si, Koreeda es un maestro tocando ese tipo de temas. Cuando haces una peli sobre bullying es fácil caer en el cliché y en el sentimentalismo, pero el director sabe plasmar una mirada objetiva que sirve perfecto para hacerte no solo sentir, sino entender todo el contexto
