Review/ Dracula: Sea of Blood
As I have mentioned many times, I am not at all a fan of the horror genre, but there are some movies of this genre that are not so strong, at least for me, some time ago I saw the trailer of a movie that was released in 2023, related to the famous Dracula of which there are thousands of productions in which he participates directly or some other vampires, but this one caught my attention for developing in an environment that is not the common one.
Dracula: Sea of Blood
This film is based on a chapter of Bram Stoker's 1897 novel Dracula, precisely the one that focuses on the journey that Dracula makes from his homeland to London, which has been mentioned very vaguely in other productions, but here the entire 1:18 minute feature film is devoted to this trip, this film was titled in English The Last Voyage of the Demeter, in Spain El último viaje del Deméter and in Spanish America Dracula: Mar de sangre.
It is true that the film is not one of the best and I do not think I will see it again, but what I like among other things, is that they take Dracula out of the typical context in which we are accustomed to see him, which are either his castle or doing his business in London, here everything happens on the high seas during the time it takes to travel from his coffin to his new home.
Now, in this adaptation, we see a Dracula not at all handsome and attractive, we do not find a rather unpleasant creature, starving and monstrous looking, with all the appearance of a bat, but very large, which losing its main source of food which had been shipped with him, begins to feed on all who are aboard the ship.
On the other hand, as it is to be expected before the first attacks, the sailors begin to express their superstitions and suspicions, which are directed to the new members of the crew, among others. In addition, when it is already certain who the enemy is, where to flee to in the middle of the ocean? What to do to prevent this evil from reaching London?
If something stands out in the film in the environment in the middle of the sea, a dense and dark environment, lots of fog, low visibility at night, which makes it scary, the Demeter is perceived as a very wet and cold ship or in the middle of the sea that the nights are dark and that this ship even not being huge, became a place in which the villain, found perfect places to hide and terrorize everyone on board.
Another strong point are the transformations of the people the vampire left alive. It is not the typical one we see in movies of this genre which, just like Dracula's form which as I already mentioned, are not at all elegant, attractive and tempting as they are usually presented to us in other movies.
As for the cast we have Corey Hawkins as Clemens, a doctor who joins the Demeter at the last minute, Liam Cunningham as the captain of the Demeter, Woody Norman as the captain's grandson, Aisling Franciosi as Anna, David Dastmalchian as Wojchek, the ship's first mate, Javier Botet as Dracula, Jon Jon Briones as Joseph, the cook who is religious, among other characters.
In summary and with the intention of not lengthening this review, I comment that if you want to see a Dracula in another environment, very ugly and in an environment of high seas this is a good option, although I understand that there is a series that also recreates this trip in some of its chapters, but you have to locate it and see it before issuing opinions, I say goodbye leaving here my review and waiting for your comments.
Como he mencionado en muchas oportunidades, no soy para nada fan del género de terror, pero hay algunas películas de este género que no son tan fuertes, al menos para mí, hace ya un tiempo vi el tráiler de una película que se estrenó en 2023, relacionada con el famoso Drácula del que hay miles de producciones en las que participa él directamente o algunos otros vampiros, pero esta llamo mi atención por desarrollarse en un ambiente que no es el común.
Drácula: Mar de sangre
Esta película está basada en un capítulo la novela Drácula de Bram Stoker de 1897, justamente el que se centra en el viaje que hace Drácula desde su tierra natal hasta Londres, el cual ha sido mencionado muy vagamente en otras producciones, pero aquí se dedica totalmente el largometraje de 1:18 minutos a este viaje, esta película fue titulada en inglés The Last Voyage of the Demeter, en España El último viaje del Deméter y en Hispanoamérica Drácula: Mar de sangre.
Es cierto que la película no de las mejores y no creo volver a verla, pero lo que me gusta entre otras cosas, es que sacan a Drácula del típico contexto en el que estamos acostumbrados a verlo que son o su castillo o haciendo de las suyas en Londres, aquí todo ocurre en alta mar durante el tiempo que duro el viaje de su féretro a su nuevo hogar.
Ahora bien, en esta adaptación, vemos un Drácula nada apuesto y atractivo, no encontramos con una criatura bastante desagradable, de aspecto famélica y monstruoso, con toda la apariencia de un murciélago, pero muy grande, el cual al perder su principal fuente de alimento la cual había sido embarcada con él, comienza a alimentarse de todos los que están a bordo del barco.
Por otro lado, como es de esperarse ante los primeros ataques, los marineros comienzan a expresar sus supersticiones y sospechas, las cuales van dirigidas a los nuevos miembros de la tripulación, entre otros. Además, cuando ya se tiene la certeza de quién es el enemigo, ¿a dónde huir en medio del océano? ¿Qué hacer para evitar que este mal llegue a Londres?
Si algo destaca de la cinta en el ambiente en medio del mar un ambiente denso y oscuro mucha neblina, poca visibilidad en las noches, lo que hace que sea tenebroso, se percibe al Deméter como un barco muy húmedo y frío u en medio del mar que las noches son sombrías y que este barco aun no siendo enorme, se convirtió en un lugar en el cual el villano, encontró lugares perfectos para esconderse y aterrorizar a todos a bordo.
Otro fuerte son las transformaciones de las personas a las que el vampiro dejaba con vida. No es la típica que vemos en las películas de este género que, al igual que la forma de Drácula que como ya mencioné, no son nada elegantes, atractivas y tentadoras como suelen presentarnos en otras películas.
En cuanto al elenco tenemos a Corey Hawkins como Clemens, un médico que se une al Deméter en el último minuto, Liam Cunningham como el capitán del Deméter, Woody Norman como el nieto del capitán, Aisling Franciosi como Anna, David Dastmalchian como Wojchek, el primer oficial del navío, Javier Botet como Drácula, Jon Jon Briones como Joseph, el cocinero quien es religioso, entre otros personajes.
En resumen y con la intención de no alargar esta revisión, comento que si deseas ver un Drácula en otro ambiente, muy feo y en un ambiente de alta mar esta es una buena opción, aunque tengo entendido que existe una serie que también recrea esta viaje en alguno de sus capítulos, pero hay que ubicarla y verla antes de emitir opiniones, me despido dejando por acá mi reseña y esperando sus comentarios.
