Friends, the television series that entertained and continues to entertain many. I recently took the time to watch it in its entirety, from episode one to the end. I more or less already knew the story of the characters, as I had watched the series since I was a teenager, but I had never seen all the episodes and never in order. This series obviously evokes a certain nostalgia for the way the social world evolved in the 90s. The funny thing is that younger people today may not have that same perception. For example, for me it is normal to see the characters using old phones but in a few decades, people might see this series with different eyes. At the beginning of the series, social networks didn't exist and I don't think portable phones were common either. These direct social relationships between people is the basis of the series, which is perhaps why it would be almost impossible to emulate it today.

Speaking of emulating the series, when I saw the last chapters I started to think about how a continuation of the series could be made. Maybe some people think that it would not be a good idea to do this and it is better to leave everything as it ended, but it is not bad to imagine a little: I think that at least a secondary series could arise from a possible plot between the children of the characters.

Recall that Ross had 2 children, one with Carol and one with Rachel. Monica had twins with Chandler through another woman since they couldn't conceive, Phoebe had 3 triplets (which are not hers, but to save explanations, let's say they are...), and Joey, although he had no children and no wife, could be an interesting twist having unintentionally impregnated a woman he was dating.

If we do the math, today the children of all these characters would be over 20 years old, so the timing would be ideal for a Friends spin-off series. We all know that some sequels like the Matrix for example were not successful, and the same Joey spin-off is a clear precedent. However, I think that if instead of trying to copy Friends and try to create something more original and adapted to modernity, it could have some positive reception. It would be 5 characters, adding other possible children Phoebe could have had with Mike, Joey, Rachel, etc.

On the subject of humor, here comes precisely my first criticism. Although the jokes and situations that this series usually shows are very good, there were some things that I would criticize. This happened a lot in the first seasons, some jokes between the characters were based on mentioning celebrities or famous people of the moment. This kind of jokes leaves many people who don't know those celebrities lost. And it is not necessary not to be American, someone from that country could easily not understand them, which I also understand since perhaps the creators did not expect a worldwide success but a regional one, in a particular audience.

Among the characters, I personally always identified more with Ross than with the others because of his focus on the scientific, and starting with him, I would say that he is a very unique character among all TV comedies, since on his own he probably wouldn't be very funny, but in combination with the others he manages to bring out the best of himself. I was very impressed with his evolution throughout the series.

As for Chandler, remembering also that actor Matthew Perry recently passed away, leaving millions of fans saddened, this character is perhaps the most beloved of the series for his trademark humor. I think there is very little to fault this character and actor in his performance, acting and development. Perhaps what could be seen as a negative are the addictions he had in his life, which may have impacted his health.

Joey is a character that on screen is loved by everyone, but perhaps not so much in real life. The actor who plays Joey was the perfect choice, as he is how he is while being funny at the same time. Not just anyone can pull this off. Another very curious thing is that I don't remember another character who was an actor, that is, an actor who played being an actor, and Matt Le Blanc did this to perfection. The only thing I would criticize about this character is his beginnings, as the Joey that everyone loves was appearing during the first season, in the first episode he was a more "ordinary" young character.

As for the women, let's start with Rachel. This actress, Jennifer Aniston, perfectly embodied the role, and to some extent I think out of the six she had the most noticeable improvement in her acting throughout the series (that is, the difference between the first and last season). In addition to acting, she can dance very well, which gives her a certain plus. I like Rachel, but when a character falls badly you know the actor may be doing a good job, and that's what sometimes happened to me with Rachel and her role as the "spoiled" and "popular" girl at school.

Monica, the chef. Courtney Cox started out as the most experienced actress of the bunch, and she did very well throughout the series, but for some reason she didn't get the acting awards that her peers did. I like Monica, despite her strict personality. I'm going to mention something I personally think: her performance and her character could have been better, I'm not saying they were bad, but for some reason I get the feeling that her character stagnated a bit after she married Chandler, something that didn't happen so much with Chandler. Beyond this, I think Monica was the most fundamental and indispensable character for the series, you could take away some of the others but not her. In fact she is the owner of the apartment where almost everything happens.

And finally, let's talk about Phoebe. I think one of the keys to this character is that she is in a way very "unattached". Phoebe, always was, Phoebe. And that never changed. It's really nice in a comedy like this to have a character that achieves such spontaneity. To be honest, as a teenager she was the least appealing to me of the three, but as an adult the tables seem to have turned. You have to be more "mature" to appreciate Phoebe's beauty. If there's one thing I could criticize about her character it's not so much her but the plot around her brother and his older wife, which I didn't find at all funny or interesting.

Friends is excellent, but I will add something that more than a criticism is a small observation. All series, even the best, go through moments of lower "performance" or "quality". I noticed this in one of the last seasons. Somewhere I read that the actors were already tired and expected the ninth to be the last season. There was one episode in these last two or three seasons that was literally a bit below par, one in which Joey and Rachel were fighting over a stuffed animal, and that was pretty much one of the main plots of the episode. There was another episode, if I'm not mistaken the first of the ninth season, where you could literally tell from the actors' faces that things weren't going quite right and the laughs were a bit forced, but about halfway through the episode, after some epic joke, it all straightened out and the chemistry between them returned.

Friends is so great that some of the supporting characters became highly praised by the audience. Janice is perhaps the best example of this, especially when you know that in any situation she can appear. We will never again live a time like the one portrayed in this series, and that perhaps makes it more valuable.

En esta reseña voy a escribir sobre esta serie, expresando todo lo que pienso sobre ella, reflexionando y resaltando tanto lo que me pareció muy positivo como lo que me pareció criticable.

Al principio de la serie, no existían las redes sociales y creo que tampoco los teléfonos portátiles eran comunes. Estas relaciones sociales directas entre personas es la base de la serie, cosa por la cual quizás sería casi imposible de emularla en la actualidad.

Hablando de emular la serie, al ver los últimos capítulos empecé a pensar en cómo podría realizarce una continuación de la misma. Quizás algunos piensen que no sería una buena idea hacer esto y es mejor dejar todo como terminó, pero no está mal imaginar un poco: creo que al menos una serie secundaria podría surgir de una posible trama entre los hijos de los personajes.

Recordemos que Ross tuvo 2 hijos, uno con Carol y otro con Rachel. Monica tuvo dos hijos mellizos con Chandler por medio de otra mujer ya que ellos no podían concebir, Phoebe tuvo 3 hijos trillizos (que no son de ella, pero para ahorrar explicaciones, digamos que sí...), y Joey, aunque no tuvo hijosni esposa, podría darse un giro interesante al haber dejado embarazada no intencionalmete a alguna mujer con las que salía.

Si hacemos cuentas, hoy en día los hijos de todos estos personajes tendrían más de 20 años, por lo que el tiempo sería el ideal para una serie derivada de Friends. Todos sabemos que algunas secuelas como las de Matrix por ejemplo no fueron exitosas, y el mismo Spin-off de Joey es un claro precedente. Me impresionó mucho su evolución en toda la serie.

En cuanto a Chandler, recordando además que el actor Matthew Perry falleció recientemente, dejando a millones de fans tristes, este personaje es quizás el más querido de la serie por su humor característico. Si hay algo que podría yo criticar de su personaje no es tanto ella sino la trama en torno a su hermano y su esposa mayor que él, la cual no me pareció del todo graciosa o interesante.

Friends es excelente, pero voy a agregar algo que más que ua crítica es una pequeña observación. Todas las series, incluso las mejores, pasan por momentos de menor "rendimiento" o "calidad". Esto lo pude notar en una de las últimas temporadas. En algun lugar leí que los actores ya estaban cansados y esperaban que la novena fuese la última temporada. Hubo un episodio de estas últimas dos o tres temporadas que literalmente estuvo un poco por debajo de lo normal, uno en el cual Joey y Rachel se peleaban por un peluche, y eso fue prácticamente una de las principales tramas del episodio. Hubo otro episodio, sino me equivoco el primero de la novena temporada, en el que literalmente podías notar en la cara de los actores que las cosas no estaban saliendo del todo bien y las risas eran un poco forzadas, pero más o menos a la mitad del episodio, luego de algún chiste épico, se enderezó todo y volvía la química entre ellos.

Friends es tan genial que algunos personajes secundarios llegaron a ser muy alabados por el público. Janice es quizás el mejor ejemplo de esto, sobre todo cuando sabes que en cualquier situación puede aparecer. Nunca más volveremos a vivir una época parecida a la que retrataron en esta serie, y eso quizás la hace más valiosa.
