Ugly Until Technology Makes You Pretty

Imagine a world where digitalization has taken full control to the extent that there is a digital standard for being pretty. You’re told you’re ugly until you undergo cosmetic surgery at 16. Maybe we don’t even have to imagine because it’s something that is actually happening right now.

Uglies is a 2024 movie about a digitalized world where everyone is seen as ugly until they undergo a cosmetic procedure. I was happy when I realized that things could actually be very easy when technology takes over the world but my happiness ended when the movie showed me the other side of technology we haven’t been paying attention to.

Normally, I would start by talking about what I liked about the movie but this time let me get straight to how disappointed I was in the actors. Apart from Shay who played her part very well, the rest of the actors were just “meh”. I couldn’t feel any emotions while watching the movie and that was when I realized there was something wrong.

There was even a scene which was trying to show us that the main character and another person were in love, but it was dry. I didn’t feel any awww or emotions in that scene. I didn’t even get what exactly what being communicated through some scenes. I kept on saying a lot of “okay, so?” because I didn’t see anything spectacular.

Oh and the plot? There was no twist at all. Everything was predictable. You could tell the next scene and then it would happen. I could guess what a character would say and the person would say it. Everything just sounded meh. It looks like the writer just wanted to put something out there for people to watch and this brings me to the ending of the movie.

I’m not sure if the writer missed somethings or the ending of the movie was a mistake because it made no sense to me. I believe the whole point of the movie was supposed to be seen in the ending, but they did something else. I was so angry but I’m not going to tell you why and spoil it for you.

On the bright side, there was a lot of technological advancement in the movie which looked cool. They did a great job portraying how a full digital world would look like and how technology can actually control humans. They also did a great job establishing that disagreement between those who live for technology and those who want nothing with it.

Above everything else, I liked the fact that they were able to distinguish between the relevance of humans just being humans and how humans could change when they get their hands on technology. I believe the message from this movie is that no matter the technological evolution, nothing will ever beat humanity and its power.

I’ve actually started watch this movie but haven’t finished it yet and I think it’s wild that people would actually want to give their feelings and emotions just to be pretty 🤯

avatar

Yeah I think it’s very wild too

I've watched this one, it's an interesting movie! I'm eagerly waiting for the next part.

avatar

There’s a next part? Then that would make sense because the first part doesn’t

avatar

Yeah, the ending suggests there's a next part. Right after the lead actress helps the other people escape, she says she will get the surgery and find a way to revolt after that. So she gets the surgery and the movie ends (displaying the old scar on her hand even though she has had the surgery, which means she deliberately kept the scar). And suggests there's going to be a continuation to show how she eventually revolts. Well, I'm just hoping it does come out, if not, the movie wouldn't make sense. 🤷

avatar

Yeah true. If there’s no part 2 the movie makes no sense. It would be more disappointing for them to bring part 2 and that one will be so off.

I have seen the movie, you're right about how most of the actors didn't portray the emotions but what I believe they successfully impacted was the effects of advanced technological takeover how it affects the human race both mentally and the environments.

avatar

Yeah that’s something I totally agree with.

"There was no twist at all. Everything was predictable. You could tell the next scene and then it would happen."

Maybe the movie was written by AI...? 😆 LOL

(Edited)

That’s exactly what I said some hours ago🤣

I said maybe they used AI to write an AI movie🤣

I haven't seen this movie because of the reviews it has had but it catches my attention. Maybe at some point I'll give it a chance. Thanks for sharing your opinion! 💕

The movie if strange, I was expecting more with the first part, but then it became a bit absurd and simple, I like the leading actress.

While I was reading you and you were talking about the ending I couldn't remember what the ending of the movie was, it would be like that hahaha.

avatar

Exactly opening scene was more promising then every just became off.

avatar

Yeah it was very basic for a technology movie.
Oh I’m sure you don’t remember everything because it was not something to remember at all. It was just off.

avatar

I thought it was just me o. I just knew how the movie was going to be from the beginning, and I wasn't wrong. I think they had a good storyline, but the actors weren't really into it as such, they automatically made it a basic movie.

avatar

With the way your blood dey hot, I'm sure you'd give whoever the writer is a resetting brain punch for not wowing you with the movie's storyline 😂 Gosh

the rest of the actors were just “meh”.

Ah!, you just finished someone's career like this 🤣🤣.

You knowwww🤣🤣

I’m just saying the truth o🤣🤣

You know, when it comes to movies, I love the fact that when I am following a scene and all I do is to predict what the actor would say next and it is so makes me feel like having such knacks for movies but you see those movies where it gets so confusing and the end looks really dry and I have predicted from the beginning to the end, it means I had wasted my time on such bad movies.

I love movies that present technology has a good tool if used well and showing us the effects if used in the wrong way.
