The Bravest Slave To Have Ever Lived

I love movies that have to do with history because I know very well everything I’m seeing is based on true life events. But funny enough, I never have the emotional capacity to finish them. And it was no different from when I was watching Harriet. It might sound funny but when I was watching this movie, my heart was just racing. I was even more scared than the characters.

Harriet is 2019 movie about how Harriet Tubman escaped slavery through dangerous missions and also helped other slaves to escape. Harriet and her family were all slaves to one particular man but after many years of serving him, the man refused to let them go. And that was the main reason why she even escaped.

In the beginning, I said my heart was racing all the time right? That was how good the main character was at taking risks, very dangerous risks. Cynthia, who starred as Harriet played the role too well that at a point, it felt like I was in the movie. I kept on shouting at her to go back. Not to do what she was doing because it was risky. You know how fictional movies are just less emotionally draining because you know it’s not true? This was no fictional movie so no matter who you are, the main character would get you in your emotions.

Some scenes got me thinking about the real life event because imagine having to jump from…oops, no spoilers. Okay, let me not forget the other characters because they also played their parts well. Some of them got me annoyed and others also got me sad. And for all these to happen behind my screen, that’s how you know the characters killed it.

For cinematography, they sure did so well. I like the fact that they tried to show the movie in great quality yet vintage. I mean it was very clear but then they didn’t too much. They really made sure it looked like something which happened years ago. And it wasn’t just the cinematography, everything was just on point. From their dressing to their script. I also liked the fact that they made sure to say archaic words to exhibit olden days style.

I know they followed a true life story to make this movie but the plot was so good. There were actually many twists in this movie that got me saying a lot of “oh no! really?”. I was about to talk about the part where I knelt down and held my head but I’m shy so let me save that for later.

My highlight for me in this movie was when Harriet escaped and then tried so hard to go back and rescue her husband. Ladies and Gentlemen, when she went back, her husband was no more her husband. I don’t want to say anything direct to spoil the movie but I’m sure the OGs get me.

If there’s anything I learnt from this movie, it’s risks. Taking risks can be a lot but it definitely pays off. Sometimes, you might not get the exact rewards you want, but you would definitely learn all that there is to learn in the end. 8.78 for this amazing historical drama. I know Harriet is probably dead by now but I want her to know she is who ever she thinks she is!

I don’t watch horror movies. I don’t have the heart for scary things.
