REVIEW: The big bad fox (2017) || El malvado zorro feroz (2017)

How did I come to this French film? Because the last animated film I saw called Migration had Benjamin Renner as director and I decided to research his previous work and "The big bad fox" was his previous work. I gave it a chance and was pleasantly surprised. Please let me tell you what it's about, no spoilers.

SYNOPSIS

Framed in a theatrical play, a group of cute animals tell us three stories that take place in a picturesque farm with different animals.

Without focusing too much on the particular characteristics of each animal, they are impregnated with human characteristics and embedded in some stereotypes of well-known fables. Simple ideas like these and stories centered on humor will make for a good time.

You can watch the three stories in any order you prefer, as they are not related to each other. But it is preferable that you keep the designed order as it is the best way to get to know these original characters and their personalities.

AN EXCELLENT PRODUCT

Maybe for some people the 2D animation format is not attractive, however, they have to give this production a chance. I like the finish that the strokes have, where the black lines that limit the outline do not close, and it is interesting to look at.

The characters are very expressive, and precisely the type of animation allows certain liberties in terms of size, stretching and speed of each animal. There are even details that just looking at them may steal a smile. Like the navel of the temperamental pig, or the wolf's droopy ear.

One point in favor I give it is the soft colors they chose to set the story. They are tasteful and don't strain the eye. There is not so much visual stimulation, which means that the attention is always on the characters, their movements, their dialogues. It is not common to find this simplicity, but rather a predominance of the most elaborate and novel. I think it was a good card to know that they had a good story, focused on humor, leaving in the background the sophisticated animation.

The stories have interactions that may sound familiar. For example, in the first story we might remember funny, or reckless friends we have, and those embarrassing situations they sometimes get us into. In the second we hear phrases from dysfunctional families that we may have heard before.

The story is designed to evoke a wide variety of feelings in the viewer. It wanders between compassion, humor, fear, tenderness.... And I think the music helps a lot, even the change of instruments and speed in it helps to anticipate a change in the story. If you notice, sometimes the song starts to spoil before the story of a character also starts to spoil.

THE SCENE

This time I will make an exception, and since the film consists of three stories, I will mention which one is my favorite, and for me it is the first one. There is humor, chaos, desperation, teamwork, tenderness, innocence, danger of death and even a scene with a speeding car. There are three central characters, who relinquish their leading role for the second story and return in the third play.

The presentation of the characters is sudden and in a few seconds they show their defined personality. It seems to me that they placed it well in the sequence, they started with the best one. For me, the second one was the weakest, and if they left it for the end we could be left with a feeling that it went from more to less.

MY OPINION

It is a movie to watch with the family, even with the little ones, because it is extremely healthy, without hidden messages. The humor is varied, where children can enjoy the slapstick of falls and blows, and adults understand better some jokes and phrases that are disguised as sarcasm. It is not excessively long, and the fact that it is divided into three parts gives the impression that we are watching a completely healthy European sitcom.

And we come to the part where I give my opinion: the top 3 phrases. They are here because they are well designed, that make you think, that you remember as time goes by, either because they are authentic, truthful, profound, original, controversial, vile lies or because they are key to understand the movie. Here they are... BANG!

It's a story that if you watch it today you won't notice that it's almost 7 years old, due to its unique animation, sense of humor and original characters. ¿Cómo llegué a ésta película francesa? Porque la última película animada que vi llamada ¡Patos! tenía como director a Benjamin Renner y decidí investigar sobre sus trabajos previos y "El malvado zorro feroz" era su trabajo anterior. Le di una oportunidad y me sorprendió gratamente. Por favor, deja que te cuente de qué se trata, sin spoilers.

SINOPSIS

Enmarcado en una obra teatral, un grupo de simpáticos animales nos relatan tres historias que suceden en una pintoresca granja con diversos animales.

Sin aunar demasiado en las características particulares de cada animal, son impregnados con características humanas y encajadas en algunos estereotipos de fábulas conocidas. Ideas sencillas como estas e historias centradas en el humor harán que se pase un buen rato.

Puedes ver las tres historias en el orden que prefieras, ya que no se relacionan una con la otra. Pero es preferible que conserves el orden diseñado en vista que es la mejor forma de conocer a éstos personajes originales y su personalidad.

UN EXCELENTE PRODUCTO

Tal vez para algunos no sea atractivo el formato de animación en 2D, sin embargo, tienen que darle una oportunidad a ésta producción. Me gusta el acabado que tienen los trazos, donde las líneas negras que limitan el contorno no se cierran, y resulta interesante a la vista.

Los personajes son muy expresivos, y precisamente el tipo de animación permite ciertas libertades en cuanto a los tamaños, los estiramientos y las velocidades de cada animal. Incluso, hay detalles que sólo al verlos puede que te roben una sonrisa. Como el ombligo del temperamental cerdo, o la oreja caída del lobo.

Un punto a favor que le doy son los colores suaves que eligieron para ambientar la historia. Son de buen gusto y no agotan la vista. No hay tanta estimulación visual, lo que hace que la atención siempre esté en los personajes, sus movimientos, sus diálogos. No es común encontrar ésta sencillez, sino que predomina lo más elaborado y novedoso. Creo que fue una buena carta al saber que tenían una buena historia, centrada en el humor, dejando en segundo plano la animación sofisticada.

Las historias tienen interacciones que nos pueden sonar familiares. Por ejemplo, en la primera historia quizás podríamos recordar a amigos graciosos, o temerarios que tengamos, y esas situaciones embarazosas en las que a veces nos meten. En la segunda escuchamos frases de familias disfuncionales que tal vez hayamos escuchado antes.

La historia está diseñada para evocar sentimientos muy variados en el espectador. Pasearse entre la compasión, el humor, el miedo, la ternura... Y creo que la música ayuda mucho, incluso, el cambio de instrumentos y velocidad en ella ayuda anticipar un cambio en la historia. Si te fijas, en ocasiones la canción se empieza a echar a perder antes de que la historia de algún personaje también empiece a echarse a perder.

LA ESCENA

Ésta vez haré una excepción, y como el film consta de tres historias, mencionaré cuál de ellas es mi favorita, y para mi es la primera. Hay humor, caos, desesperación, trabajo en equipo, ternura, inocencia, peligro de muerte y hasta escena con un auto a toda velocidad. Tres son los personajes centrales, que ceden su papel protagónico para la segunda historia y vuelven a la carga en la tercera obra.

La presentación de los personajes es súbita y en pocos segundos muestran su definida personalidad. Me parece que la ubicaron bien en la secuencia, empezaron con la mejor. Para mi, la segunda fue la más floja, y si la dejaban para el final podríamos quedar con una sensación de que fue de más a menos.

MI OPINIÓN

Es una película para ver en familia, hasta con los más pequeños, porque es sumamente sana, sin mensajes escondidos. El humor es variado, donde los niños pueden disfrutar del slapstick de caídas y golpes, y los adultos entendemos mejor algunos chistes y frases que se quieren disfrazar de sarcasmo. No es excesivamente larga, y por el hecho de estar divida en tres partes da la impresión que estamos viendo un sitcom europeo completamente sano.

Y llegamos a la parte donde doy mi opinión: el top 3 de frases. Están aquí por ser bien diseñadas, que te hacen pensar, que recuerdas al pasar el tiempo, bien sea por ser autenticas, veraces, profundas, originales, controversiales, viles mentiras o porque son clave para entender la película. Aquí están... ¡PUM!

"Lo que hay que hacer para ser feliz" (Gallina)

Es una historia que si la vez hoy no notarás que ya tiene casi 7 años que se estrenó, en vista a su singular animación, sentido del humor vigente y personajes originales.
