REVIEW: Migration (2023) || ¡Patos! (2023)

It is the latest installment of Illumination Studios, with new things and others not so much, with clear influences from previous productions. All in all, is it worth seeing? Please stay for me to tell you a little bit about it, and without spoilers.

SYNOPSIS

A family of four ducks (father, mother, son and daughter) live quietly and safely on a pond, but thanks to a visit from another group of ducks in the midst of migrating to Jamaica for the winter, they decide to embark on their own adventure. They are joined by Uncle Dan, who appears to be the father's brother because of the colors of his feathers, and so they complete the "V" shape as they take flight.

Along the way they will encounter different situations that will put them at risk to finish the journey. This will involve meeting characters that will complicate things, others that will help them and others that will not be clear if they are friends or enemies. All this will allow the members of this family to learn about what he himself can do and the abilities and gifts of his family members.

They are unpublished characters, created for this story. Is it a story already told?

WITHIN THE SAFE ZONE.

The following comments can be perceived in the trailer itself. They are not spoilers.

The story of a family going on a journey is nothing new, we have already seen it in animated versions as well as with real actors, who seek to entertain us from humor, or from emotions or from drama. So that may deprive some from adding it to their list to see.

A head of the family determined to stay in his comfort zone and try to convince others based on fear is also a resource we have seen. That overprotective father (or mother) figure is what makes some identify with some situations and decisions that are made.

It is to be assumed that the family will stick together at all costs, no matter what. That is why we have the suspicion that the same people who started the journey will turn out to arrive at their destination. Will the same thing happen here or will they dare to overthrow the stereotype?

HIGHLIGHTS

I think that having unpublished characters is a plus. You feel the curiosity to know the personality of each of the characters, to know new places and different situations. That keeps you in the seat.

The animation is very good and realistic. Starting with the scenes in the water, going through the flying scenes, where the textures, colors and lights are very different. And finally, the urban locations are well done and realistic, using colorimetry very well to help what the director wants you to feel in this part of the story.

I also liked how they realistically present the characteristics of each bird. For example, if you've watched a duck swim closely it's quite impressive, how it moves its legs underwater and propels itself without apparent effort. This is how you can see it in the water scenes. It's not the same to see a duck flying as a pigeon, even those sudden jerky movements are very different from the ducks. It's very beautiful and well done.

I think the timing of addressing the migration issue may make some may identify with those who have had to say goodbye to their family and friends, I don't think migrants are looking forward to going to the movies in their new place of stay or while traveling to their destination. What is happening in Latin American countries and in Europe may be evidence of that.

It is a story that seeks to entertain you with a positive, happy, adventurous, humorous tone, without exploring much in the sentimental or sad part, as other studios and directors have done. A simple example is the theme of bird captivity. It is approached in a very superficial way, where you barely hear a sentence from Dax with complete empathy, and then continue with the humor of another character. This is why it can be watched without any fear in front of the little ones.

LOWEST RATING

Perhaps what I would rate with low numbers would be some stereotypes that persist. For example, that tender character that seeks to move the audience is easy to spot. Also, the fact of having a small character that doesn't seem to be what he appears to be seems to be copied from other characters that we have already seen in previous movies from that studio.

The villain seems like a mismatched piece of the puzzle. His craft? Okay, I get it. But it's hard to match his appearance. Why did they create him that way? I have no problem with him not uttering a single word, maybe they wanted to instill fear through his body language and colors of his restaurant, or maybe they didn't have the budget to add another celebrity to voice him. But I really didn't see the point of his overwrought look, making him look like he belongs in a different story, not this one.

MY OPINION

Despite being a predictable story for having all those tried and tested elements, it covers all that with wholesome entertainment, walking you through moments of adventure, survival and slapstick. So I can openly recommend it to all audiences. It's a good story, very well presented on screen.

There may be some who can relate to the family interaction, as when the duck parents begin to show their complicity and excitement for the things they are experiencing together. This is also made more noticeable by the decision to keep the arguments from getting too heated.

And we come to the part where I give my opinion: the top 3 phrases. They are here because they are well designed, that make you think, that you remember as time goes by, either because they are authentic, truthful, profound, original, controversial, vile lies or because they are key to understand the movie. Here they are... BANG!

"Thank you. For opening my eyes" (Mack)

Yes, this movie is a cake you've tried before and you probably liked it. So why turn it down if they offer it to you again with a different decoration? You will probably like this one too. This is my recommendation for this week. I hope I've been helpful, see you next time!

SINOPSIS

Una familia de cuatro patos (padre, madre, hijo e hija) viven de forma tranquila y segura en un estanque, pero gracias a la visita de otro grupo de patos en plena migración a Jamaica por el invierno, deciden emprender su propia aventura. Se les une el tío Dan, quien parece ser hermano del padre por los colores de sus plumas, y con eso completan la figura en forma de "V" cuando emprenden el vuelo.

En el camino se encontrarán con diferentes situaciones que pondrán en riesgo terminar el trayecto. Eso implicará conocer a personajes que le complicarán las cosas, otros que los ayudarán y otros que no quedará claro si son amigos o enemigos. Todo ésto permitirá que los miembros de ésta familia conozcan de él mismo puede hacer y de las habilidades y dones de sus familiares.

Son personajes inéditos, creados para ésta historia. ¿Es una historia ya contada?

La historia de una familia que emprende un viaje no es algo novedoso, ya la hemos visto tanto en versiones animadas como con actores reales, que buscan entretenernos desde el humor, o desde las emociones o desde el drama. Así que puede que eso prive a algunos de agregarla a su lista para ver.

Un cabeza de la familia decidido a mantenerse en su zona de confort y tratar de convencer a los demás en base al miedo también es un recurso que hemos visto. Esa figura de padre (o madre) sobreprotector es lo que hace que algunos se identifiquen con algunas situaciones y decisiones que se toman.

Es de suponer que la familia se mantendrá unida a toda costa, pase lo que pase. Por eso tenemos la sospecha de que resultarán llegar a su destino los mismos que iniciaron el viaje. ¿Sucederá aquí lo mismo o se atreverán a tumbar el estereotipo?

LO MÁS SOBRESALIENTE

Creo que tener personajes inéditos es un punto a favor. Se siente la curiosidad de conocer la personalidad de cada uno de los personajes, de conocer lugares nuevos y situaciones diferentes. Eso hace que te mantengan sentado a la butaca.

La animación es muy buena y realista. Empezando con las escenas en el agua, pasando por las escenas de vuelo, donde las texturas, colores y luces son muy diferentes. Y finalmente, las locaciones urbanas están bien hechas y realistas, usando muy bien la colorimetría para ayudar a lo que el director quiere que sientas en ésta parte de la historia.

Me gustó también cómo presentan con realismo las características de cada ave. Por ejemplo, si has visto con detenimiento a un pato nadar es algo impresionante, cómo mueve sus patas bajo del agua y se impulsa sin aparente esfuerzo. Así puedes verlo en las escenas del agua. No es igual ver volar a un pato que a una paloma, incluso esos movimientos bruscos y repentinos son muy diferentes a la de los patos. Es muy bonito y bien hecho.

Creo que el momento de abordar el tema de la migración puede hacer que algunos puedan sentirse identificados con quienes han tenido que despedir a sus familiares y amigos, no creo que los migrantes estén deseando ir al cine en su nuevo lugar de estadía o mientras viajan a su destino. Lo que está sucediendo en países de Latinoameríca y en Europa pueden ser evidencia de eso.

Es una historia que busca entretenerte con un tono positivo, alegre, aventurero, humorístico, sin explorar mucho en la parte sentimental o triste, como sí lo han hecho otros estudios y directores. Un ejemplo sencillo es el tema del cautiverio de aves. Se aborda de una forma muy superficial, donde apenas se escucha una oración de Dax con completa empatía, para luego seguir con el humor de otro personaje. Por eso se puede ver sin ningún temor en frente de los más pequeños.

CALIFICACIÓN MÁS BAJA

Tal vez lo que calificaría con números bajos sería algunos estereotipos que persisten. Por ejemplo, ese personaje tierno que busca conmover a la audiencia es fácil de detectar. También, el hecho de tener a un personaje pequeño que no parece ser lo que aparenta parece calcado de otros personajes que ya hemos visto en películas anteriores de ése estudio.

El villano parece una pieza que no corresponde a éste rompecabezas. ¿Su oficio? Está bien, lo entiendo. Pero es difícil compaginar su aspecto. ¿Por qué lo crearon de esa forma? No tengo problemas en que no pronuncie ni una sola palabra, tal vez querían insuflar miedo mediante su lenguaje corporal y colores de su restaurant, o quizás no haya que descartar con que no había más presupuesto para agregar a otro famoso a que le hiciera la voz. Pero realmente no le vi sentido a su sobrecargado aspecto, haciendo que luzca que pertenece a una historia diferente, no a esta.

MI OPINIÓN

A pesar de ser una historia previsible por tener todos esos elementos que ya han sido usados y de eficacia comprobada, cubre todo eso con entretenimiento sano, paseándote por momentos de aventura, de sobrevivencia y de slapstick. Así que puedo recomendarla abiertamente, a todo público. Es una buena historia, muy bien presentada en la pantalla.

Tal vez haya algunos que se sientan identificados con esa interacción de la familia, como cuando los padres patos empiezan a mostrarse cómplices y emocionados por las cosas que están viviendo juntos. Esto se ve más notorio también por la decisión de que las discusiones no lleguen a subir tanto de tono.

Y llegamos a la parte donde doy mi opinión: el top 3 de frases. Están aquí por ser bien diseñadas, que te hacen pensar, que recuerdas al pasar el tiempo, bien sea por ser autenticas, veraces, profundas, originales, controversiales, viles mentiras o porque son clave para entender la película. Aquí están... ¡PUM!

Sí, ésta película es un pastel que has probado antes y que seguramente te ha gustado. Así que, ¿por qué rechazarlo si te lo ofrecen de nuevo con otra decoración? Probablemente éste también te guste. Ésta es mi recomendación para ésta semana. Espero haber sido de ayuda. ¡Hasta la próxima!
